EASTERN CANADIAN POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

For Immediate Release
November 24, 2009

Charlottetown, PE…The 2009 Kwik Kopy Design & Print Centre Eastern Canadian Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships boasts the best line-up of lifters ever outside of the annual CPU National Championships.

The feature lifter is Super Heavy-Weight Edmonton Alberta’s Alex Mardell. Mardell who was invited to the event by the event organizers. He chose to come to Charlottetown, PEI, the Birthplace of Confederation to make his own history and become the first man in the Canadian Powerlifting Union to total 1000 kilograms.

Mardell was the gold medallist in the bench press at the 2008 World Powerlifting Championships where he competed in the 125 kgs (275 lbs) weight class. Since then he has moved to the Super Heavy-Weight class and weighs in at close to 300 pounds. The 29 year –old has been preparing for this day and has exceeded the 1000 kilograms total in the gym in his pre-meet preparations for the Easterns.

Tom Nicholls , Meet Director for the event says “ We are thrilled to have Big Alex coming to PEI to make history, and I wouldn’t be the least surprised if he hit close to a 1025 kilograms total, shattering the 1000 mark. The best thing about Alex is he is a very humble person and represents what the CPU is all about, first class lifters and first class people. So, if you want to see a big Western farmboy lift big weights, then Holland College is the place to be this Saturday !!”

This past weekend Mardell competed in the Western Championships in the bench press only event and bench pressed 672 pounds, narrowly missing a new Canadian Record of 706 pounds on a third attempt. Nicholls had this to say of the performance “ It was as close as you could get to not getting the lift. Alex sent me a video clip of the lift and he smashed it off his chest like nothing and missed it at lock-out, one arm was locked out properly and the other was about one inch from lock-out, that’s just how close it was.”

Mardell will have a full schedule during his arrival to the Island prior to lifting on Saturday. He will be featured live Friday on the morning show on K-Rock 105.5 Radio at 8:30 am with Zac Bell and Colin MacKay. Followed by a live radio interview on Majic 93.1 at 9:00am with Paul Alan. In the afternoon, he will also be interviewed live on CBC Radio Mainstreet at 4 pm with host Matt Rainnie. During the day, he will be doing a promotional tour around Charlottetown finishing with a meet and greet reception and autograph signing at Naturally Fit, 144 St. Peters Road, from 6pm-8pm. This is an open invitation to the general public to attend and meet Alex.

Nicholls also noted “ We are very fortunate to have great partners in this City and Province to help us bring in a World Class caliber lifter like Alex. This will give the public a big indication of what lies ahead when we host the 2011 National Championships.”

The Easterns will be held Saturday, November 28th at 10 am at the Holland College gymnasium located on the corner of Kent and Weymouth Street in Charlottetown.

The event has attracted 44 athletes registered to compete in the powerlifitng championships. As well, there are 18 athletes entered in the bench press championships. The powerlifting portion of the event will begin at 10 am and will be followed by the bench press event and award ceremonies.

The line-up of lifters for the Easterns is a stellar one with close to 2 dozen current or former National Champions, one World Champion, and several lifters who have won individual medals at various age categories at the World Championships.

Athletes and their respective weight classes taking part in the Championships from PEI are Megan Bryanton (52 kgs), Heather Ayles (60 kgs), Kolton Doucette (56 kgs), Jason Perry (67.5 kgs), Joe Doohan (67.5 kgs), Evan Dunn (82.5 kgs), Chad Ramsey (90 kgs), Wyatt Inman (90 kgs), Sam Arseneault (100 kgs), J.P. Richard (100 kgs), Matt MacLean (110 kgs), Jeffery Perry (110 kgs), Tom Nicholls (110 kgs), John MacDonald (125 kgs) and Chris Loane (125 kgs).

As for the caliber and quality of lifters that the spectators will see, Nicholls was impressed, “ We have 5 ladies lifting, all who have been either to a World Championship, won an individual medal at the Worlds, won a National title or have broken National records.”

As for the men lifting, he also noted a similar display of accomplishments as the women, “ we have 12 guys coming to lift that will squat over 600 pounds, 3 over 700 and 1 or 2 over 800. As for the bench press, we have 12 guys who will bench over 400 pounds, 6 over 500 pounds and one either over 675 or 700 pounds. When it gets deadlift time, you will see some strong pulls, with 12 guys doing over 600 pounds and 4 doing over 700 pounds.”

The event is a qualifier for the CPU National Championships, being held in 2010 in Quebec City in early April. To learn more about powerlifting, the CPU National website is http://www.powerlifting.ca and the Provincial website is http://www.peipowerlifting.com.

Tom, what a great job you've done promoting your meet i wish you much success. I talked with Alex for over an hour last night on the phone and we have one very motivated man here. Whether he hits 1000 or 1025 Saturday you will see him plug away and chip away getting 10-20 kilo's this coming year and for the immediate next few yrs on his total. I for one am e mailing my old friend Pete to see if we can't get Alex some help with his gear from Titan, if anyone else can get him hooked up through a suppliment supplier than get at it he could use the help i'm sure. Anyways i'm not his agent just an old friend and a big fan, lets get behind Alex here and get him the support he needs to bring this God givin gift to his full potential.

Best of luck bro,

Shawn & Gabe O'H
